Police units throughout Pennsylvania will be participating in a targeted aggressive driving enforcement campaign from Mondaythrough May 1.

In Schuylkill County, participants will include Pennsylvania State police from the Frackville and Schuylkill Haven barracks joined by officers from the Tamaqua and West Penn and Rush Township police departments. Their targeted areas will be Routes 309, 209, 54 as well as other roadways in the county. This is the second wave of the current campaign with the goal of reducing the number of aggressive driving related crashes, injuries and deaths on roadways throughout the state. No warnings will be given. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket. The enforcement wave will focus on speeding, work zone safety violations and keeping right and passing left. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors, such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely or other aggressive actions, will also be cited.Last year's campaign resulted in 53,000 aggressive driving related citations, including 35,126 for speeding alone. The second highest number of citations, 4,879, were issued for failure to obey traffic signals/signs. Officers made 61 felony arrests, 107 impaired driving arrests and issued 1,221 citations for "occupant protection" (seat belt, child safety seat) violations. The campaign is part of the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project, funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportationand the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
