Tamaqua pool to open May 28

Tamaqua's Bungalow Pool will be opening on May 28.

Tamaqua Borough Council finalized plans for the summer at their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday night.Council President David Mace said the current closing date for the pool is Aug. 28, but he won't rule out being open for the Labor Day holiday at this point. "It will depend on our staff's availability," he said.Fees for this year will remain the same.An annual pass for Tamaqua School District residents will cost $10 per person. Annual passes for out of district residents will be $100 per person. Visitor passes will also be available this year at a rate of $20 per person per week, with a two week maximum.Council also approved an amendment to the public access agreement with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission for the Owl Creek Reservoir property. Essentially, the agreement will extend the current fishing and boating rules that apply to the upper dam to the lower one as well. At the time of the original agreement, the lower dam was nonoperational.Council will also provide a letter to the Schuylkill River National Heritage Area in support of bringing their Bike Share Program to Tamaqua, working with local partner Rich Stianche of DnA Bikes.Under the program, the local bike store would make bikes available for people to borrow for the day to bike on local trails.Borough manager Kevin Steigerwalt said that since the police department's policy of not refunding tickets due to jammed meters went into effect earlier this month, no intentionally vandalized meters have been reported.Council heard from resident Kathy McGeehan, who expressed concerns about the proximity of her neighbor's grill and use under a roofed porch. "I'm terrified she's going to start a fire with this grill," said McGeehan. "I don't want to get her in trouble, I just want to keep my house safe."Council will forward the matter to code enforcement and Police Chief Rick Weaver said he would look into it.Other business• Approved a recommendation from HARC to permit the construction of a 24-by-24-foot pavilion in the rear of the Hang Loose.• Accepted a proposal from Alfred Benesch & Company for $47,000 for design, permitting, and construction administration for the Wabash Culvert repair project.• Approved a four-year lease agreement with Community Leasing Partners for a 2016 Ford SUV police vehicle with annual payments of $10,969.83.Council held an executive session for personnel, legal, and real estate matters.
