The Slatington Police Station is in need of some rearranging. Borough Police Chief David Rachman told the board about the issues with the current setup of the station.

"If you open the door, you're right there in our squad room," he said. "The design is not safe. It's probably not even legal."The idea is to install a pass code/magnetic lock for the door, expand the entrance to add chairs and add a dividing wall with a clear window in the new waiting area."Obviously it's a safety concern," Rachman said, adding that along with safety is the issue of confidentiality. Often paperwork contains personal or sensitive information about a person of interest or an ongoing investigation."We have limited manpower so we either have to send people outside or let them be unsupervised to see all the information that's available."Rachman said money had been budgeted for the improvements. "It needs to be done."Councilman Joe Wechsler agreed, saying the updates should be timed with the new doors that need to be installed in the borough building."We'll get several estimates for the April meeting," Rachman said.Along with the station, the borough is hoping to make some new improvements to the roads and Victory Park this year. Council made a motion to apply for a CDBG Grant for funds to repair South Walnut, East Church and West Washington streets. The cost is an estimated $80,000 plus per road.Stop signs on either end of South Walnut Street will be added this spring. The borough recently received a Transportation Alternatives Grant to add sidewalks to Victory Park. A "Patrons Only" parking sign will be added to the park along with a dog waste receptacle and recycling containers.The board is hoping to restore the stairway railing at the park which had been destroyed in a crash the previous summer.Councilman Michael Brogan said, "A motorcycle accident took out the railing. We are going to bill the insurance of the driver in the crash."Parade season will begin in May with the American Legion Annual Memorial Day Parade the morning of May 30.The second annual Day in the Park event will take place July 30. The event, featuring local bands and food, will be hosted in Victory Park as a fundraiser for the 131st annual Halloween Parade held Oct. 22 this year with streets closing at 5:30 p.m.
