Jim Thorpe approves fund transfer for street repairs

Several roads in Jim Thorpe should be a little smoother come the fall.

Borough Council unanimously voted Thursday night to transfer $300,000 from its sanitation fund to the general fund to pay for street repair this summer."This is a one-time situation," Councilman Jay Miller said. "Some of our roads have been in disrepair for some time and it's time to make a penetration into what I'm calling pothole city. I wasn't put on council to sit here. We have problems in this town and it's time to start getting some things done."Originally, the borough only planned an aggressive patching program for the summer because it had budgeted money to purchase two dump trucks, 10 tons and 5 tons respectively. At last week's council workshop, however, Miller said he felt the borough should take advantage of generous asphalt prices."You can get a lot of work done with those prices," he said.Miller said he would leave it up to the borough's public works supervisor and borough manager to come up with the list of roads to be resurfaced.Thursday night, Public Works Supervisor Vince Yaich said they would all be main roads."I feel after looking at this closely that it's giving back to the community," said Councilwoman Joanne Klitsch. "Our residents have been coming here month after month complaining about the condition of the roads. The money is there, so let's do it."The sanitation fund stands at just over $959,000 after the transfer.Councilman John McGuire said at least $500,000 should remain in the account in case of any emergencies with the cover at its landfill.
