New trash cans for Lower Towamensing
Lower Towamensing Township supervisors had a chance to see for themselves what type of garbage cans the residents would be receiving from the new haulers.
Tony Puorro, co-owner of County Waste, pulled a brand-new 65-gallon garbage can into the municipality's meeting room Tuesday night. Puorro said every household will receive one of these garbage cans for free. The cans will be dropped off at each residence the week after Easter. The cans can hold about three trash bags of garbage, he said, and they are light and easy to roll. If the can does turn out to be too big or too small, the company will replace it with a smaller or larger one. The name and phone number of County Waste is on the side of the garbage can, so residents will be able to call them if they need a different size."If the can breaks, we'll replace it," Puorro said.Residents attending the meeting and the supervisors had several questions about the garbage cans and why they are free. One resident wanted to know if his garbage rates will go up since they are getting new garbage cans.Supervisor Brent Green said, "We've actually seen a decrease in the costs."Supervisor Ronald Walbert said the cans are good quality and can be expensive to buy at the store."You're getting a nice one for free," he said.Puorro said that providing the cans will make collecting the garbage more efficient for them. Not only can the cans hold a large amount of garbage, but putting it all in one can makes collection quicker. The cans also make garbage collection neater."The two worst culprits are crows and squirrels," Puorro said. When the garbage bags are sitting out instead of in a garbage can, animals are attracted to it. He has seen deer feeding from the garbage bags, too. A broken garbage bag makes a mess.County Waste has a five-year contract with the township, but the cans are for the residents to keep. The supervisors said they can write their last name on the can or some other mark to make it their own.Puorro asked that residents place the can with the handle facing their homes to make collection and dumping of the cans quicker. He also encouraged people to put the garbage out the night before. That way no one gets missed when they come through early in the morning.
