Northern Lehigh School District continues to feel the sting as the record-breaking state budget impasse lingers.
Sherri Molitoris, co-director of business affairs/human resources, notified the school board on Monday that the money the district put in the 2015-16 budget that was to have been reimbursement from the State Department of Education will result in a loss in revenue to the tune of about $411,000."We'll finish the year probably in the hole," Molitoris said. "We're going to end up using more and more of our fund balance, which will be a huge hit for us."Despite the circumstances, Director Donna Kulp praised the district for being fiscally responsible over the years when crafting previous budgets.Superintendent Michael Michaels said that the budget impasse has been very "stressful" for the district.Michaels said it's the students who are important to the district, as they are what fuel the district. He then took legislators to task over the lack of a state budget, and said, "I feel we're a pawn in their game."They're all mature adults; it's time they acted like it," Michaels said. "It's about time they stood up and did what's right."Board President Edward Hartman told Michaels, "We all agree with everything you said."Last month, Molitoris made the board aware the district would realize a $411,000 shortfall in its own spending plan because the governor's budget zeroed out the line item for PlanCon reimbursement.Molitoris said at that time it forced the district to put a freeze on its spending budget because it wasn't sure how much money it will receive from the state.
