Wives, girlfriends often the victims

Wives are overwhelmingly the victims of domestic violence shootings, followed closely by girlfriends, according to data compiled by the Associated Press.

Overall, women were the victims in more than four out of every five of these types of incidents, according to the AP.• Between 2006 and 2014, a total of 6,235 people were fatally shot during domestic disputes.• Of those, 2,691 were wives and 1,953 were girlfriends.• Husbands accounted for 576 of the victims, and boyfriends 488.• Former wives fatally shot numbered 238; common-law wives 171; former husbands 64; and common-law husbands, 54.• In Pennsylvania, 278 people were killed by guns during domestic incidents over those eight years.
