Man charged in death of woman found in recycling bin

ALLENTOWN (AP) - A Pennsylvania man has been charged with criminal homicide and abuse of a corpse in the death of a woman whose body was found stuffed into a recycling bin last month, the Lehigh County district attorney's office said Tuesday.

Walter Bratvold, 62, of Allentown, had been in a relationship with Rose Sieniawski, 59, whose decomposing body was found Feb. 14 in a recycling bin at an apartment complex. She died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Bratvold was charged earlier with attempted homicide and aggravated assault in connection with a Feb. 16 exchange of gunfire with Allentown officers in which both a detective and the suspect were wounded. Bratvold was taken to a hospital but on Tuesday was transferred to Lehigh County jail, officials said.

Authorities had gone to Sieniawski's address after finding out that state transportation department records listed both the victim and Bratvold as living there. Sieniawski's employer indicated that she had not been to work since Feb. 9 and hadn't called in to work. Officials said she had left her job that day accompanied by a man they identified as the suspect.

Inside the apartment, which was two blocks from the bin where the body was found, a .22-caliber revolver purchased by Bratvold was recovered and was later found to match a bullet recovered from the victim, prosecutors said.

"Team members noticed that the apartment smelled of decomposition," the district attorney's office said in a statement.

Court documents indicate that Bratvold will be represented by the Lehigh County public defender's office, which couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday.
