Students celebrate Dr. Seuss Day

It isn't just any day that students at St. Jerome Regional School in Tamaqua are granted a visit from an iconic reading character.

Which is why an appearance by The Cat in the Hat made Wednesday extra special for the students, who reveled at the sight of the beloved character.The event was in conjunction with other Dr. Seuss Day/Read Across America celebrations held throughout the area.Dr. Joanne Calabrese, of St. Luke's Internal Medicine, said St. Luke's sponsors each day through schools in the local area.Calabrese said volunteers read the book "Green Eggs and Ham" to each class, and then donated the book to each classroom.Additionally, Calabrese said bookmarks with the Reader's Oath, which was developed by the National Education Association, and Dr. Seuss activity sheets, were distributed to the students who participated in the event.The celebration initially got underway last week Friday at both Panther Valley Elementary School and West Penn Elementary School.Our Lady of the Angels, Lansford; Head Start, Coaldale; and St. Joseph's Regional Academy, Jim Thorpe, all held events on Monday.Along with St. Jerome's, events were held Wednesday at Tamaqua Elementary, as well as Panther Valley Intermediate Building.An event is scheduled this afternoon at LB Morris Elementary School in Jim Thorpe.
