The District 11 Class AA Swimming Championships will take place Friday and Saturday at Parkland High School.

Despite the fact that Tamaqua is the only Times News area school with a swim team, there will be no shortage of local athletes looking to 'make waves' as the event unfolds.In addition to numerous swimmers representing the Blue Raider program, independent swimmers from Marian, Weatherly, Northern Lehigh and Palmerton high schools will also be entered in the two-day competition.Local swimmers have managed to snare four top seeds as a pair of Marian swimmers have the fastest qualifying times in two events each.Junior Katie Kurzinsky is returning to this year's district meet to add to her already impressive resume. A D-11 medalist from a year ago, she snagged the highest seed in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.41. Three hundredths of a second behind her is Southern Lehigh's Gwynn Kylish, who is looking to pose potential problems. The Fillie also managed the top seed in the 100 backstroke event, as her mark of 1:00.75 is nearly five seconds faster than the remainder of the field. Tamaqua sophomore Lexi Kerstetter is seeded second (1:05.64) in the event.Marian's freshman phenom Danny Berlitz is looking to make a huge splash at his first district meet, collecting the top seeds in the 200 individual medley as well as the 500 freestyle. In the longest race of the day, Berlitz managed a top-seeded time of 4:42.90, nearly 17 seconds ahead of Northern Lehigh senior Jose Avila (4:59.83), who is seeded second. The race has the potential to be swept by area athletes as the third seed is Marian junior Timmy Dando.In addition to his second seed in the 500 free, Avila is also seeded second in the 200 freestyle.
