Five people were killed Wednesday afternoon in a fiery crash involving a car and tractor trailer truck. Upper Macungie Township police said the crash occurred about 3:59 p.m. along Route 222 at the Route 100 split.
Police said a Subaru Impreza was driven northbound when the car crossed the center grass median and then into the path of a Freightliner tractor with trailer. The two vehicles collided head-on.Upon impact the Subaru broke into two parts with two of the occupants ejected. Both vehicles were engulfed in flames.All the deceased were in the Subaru. The names are being withheld until the next of kin can be notified.The truck driver, Richard Eckrote, of Allentown, was not injured. Police said Eckrote could not avoid the collision.Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said the dead include two women and a man, but the others will have to be identified through other procedures.Police ask anyone who might have witnessed the crash to call them at 484-861-5911, ext. 352.
