Lions donate to fire companies

The Bowmanstown-Parryville Lions Club held a Valentine's party on Feb. 15 at the Bowmanstown Volunteer Fire Company. Each person received a heart-shaped box of candy after dinner.

Lion President Henry Altemose invited Jim Bonser of the Parryville Volunteer Fire Company and Bruce Koch of Bowmanstown to come to the front and accept a check from the Lions in the amount of $1,800. A third check was to go to Cory Smith from the East Penn Fire Company.Koch said the fire company is indebted to the Lions and grateful. "Look at our floor. It is very much appreciated." It was not only the floor that has been renovated but the entire social hall.Bowmanstown will use its $1,800 to install rails at the front entrance.Bonser thanked Altemose for the donation. It will be used to purchase a new electric positive pressure ventilation fan to replace an older gas-powered model.East Penn will use its donation to purchase garage door openers for their new pole building which houses its brush units and other firefighting equipment.In addition, onApril 17, the club will hold a block shoot at the Bowmanstown Rod and Gun Club, 55 Gun Club Road, Palmerton, to benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Lower Carbon County.There will be a Something Special drawing for an M.I. Hummel 18-piece tea set donated by the Earl Reabolds, a handmade quilt made by Carolyn Spairana, an afghan crocheted by Nancy Herzog, a 195-piece Black and Decker tool set from Richard Beers and a surprise prize.From noon to 4 p.m. there will be a Chinese auction. Altemose said the club had raised money for Relay for Life ever since the first one was held in Palmerton."When duty calls, they (the firefighters) are always there," said William Ravert as part of the benediction.
