Lehighton may eventually beef up its security system.
Police chief Brian Biechy discussed the matter with borough council on Monday.Biechy said the borough received a proposal from Vistacom Inc. of Allentown. He said the cost would be about $52,000, and would include hardware, software and the installation of up to 64 cameras.Biechy said they would be high-end cameras that would be location-specific, some of which would be pole-mounted to allow for the best facial identification.Borough manager Nicole Beckett said the matter was only in the discussion phase, but that the issue would be brought back to council next month.Councilman Scott Rehrig, who participated in the meeting via Skype, commended both Biechy and Beckett for the work they've done so far.Councilwoman Helen Torok questioned if council members would know where the cameras will be set up.Biechy said every place the cameras will be installed will be a public access area.Rehrig said he doesn't believe council members should know where the cameras will be placed.Ultimately, Biechy said the borough is an open public entity, and that the cameras are designed to go in specific places for specific reasons. After the meeting, Biechy said there are a variety of systems throughout the borough, and that this would merely replace older, outdated, individual systems."It's nothing we don't already have," Biechy said. "We have to replace some antiquated hardware, antiquated cameras, and rather than doing individual systems, we're looking at doing one system for the entire borough."Biechy said the decision as to where the cameras would be placed would be determined through a combination of the company and the borough.
