WILKES-BARRE (AP) - A homeless man has been sentenced to 20 to 40 years in the stabbing death of a Navy veteran who had taken him in.
Twenty-eight-year-old Matthew Vantine pleaded guilty to third-degree murder last month in Luzerne County in the January 2015 death of 53-year-old Bryan Hogan.Prosecutors said the two got into an argument after drinking, and Vantine pulled out a folding knife and stabbed Hogan in the chest, severing an artery and a vein.Police arrested Vantine a few hours later on charges of holding up a convenience store for $150, wearing blood-soaked socks and a bloody knife. Hogan's body was discovered three days later.The (Wilkes-Barre) Citizens' Voice reports that Vantine apologized to the victim's family Monday, saying "I wish I could bring him back."
