Fillies, Olympians, Indians play Friday

The Marian girls, along with the Jim Thorpe and Lehighton boys, will be in District 11 basketball quarterfinal round action on Friday.

Following are preview capsules on all three games:CLASS AA GIRLSQUARTERFINALSNo. 7 Salisbury vs. No. 2 MarianTIPOFF:Friday, Feb. 19 at Blue Mountain 5:30 p.m.COACHES:Salisbury - Joe Miadosich; Marian - Paul Brutto.RECORDS:Salisbury (12-11); Marian (21-3).LEADING SCORERS:Salisbury - Lindsay Bauer (G, Sr., 19.7); Marian - Vanessa Whitecavage (G, Sr., 11.88), Savannah Krushinsky (F, Sr., 11.17), Brenna Karnish (G, Jr., 8.63).GAME NOTES:These two teams actually scrimmaged before the season started, so they're not totally in the dark with what to expect come Friday ... The key for the Fillies will be to stop Salisbury guard Lindsay Bauer (19.7 ppg). She is one of the best players in the Colonial League and can score in bunches. She scored over 20 points 12 times this season, and has topped the 30-point mark twice. She was held to single digits just once this season against the No. 1 ranked District 11 AAA playoff team, Southern Lehigh on Jan. 8. The next closest high scorer for Salisbury averages just over five points per game, so it's safe to say if the Fillies can stop Bauer, they will have a good chance of winning this one ... The Fillies made a nice run in the Schuylkill League playoffs, defeating District 11 AAAA No. 4-seed Pottsville 46-40, and then giving undefeated No. 1 ranked District 11 AA seed Minersville a tough time in the championship game, losing by 11. The reason for the Fillies improved play late in the season has been their ability to get three players in double figures. Whitecavage and Krushinsky have been solid scoring all season, but as of late, Brenna Karnish has been consistently getting in double figures, which gives the Fillies that all important third scoring option.QUOTEABLE:"The key for us against Salisbury will be to be patient. They have success in their zone defenses, and a lot of times team will settle for jump shots against them. We have to be patient and disciplined offensively and let our sets do the work a little bit. It's important for us not to force things if there isn't anything there. Defensively, we obviously have to stop Bauer. It won't be an easy task, but we work hard on defense each and every day." - Marian head coach Paul Brutto.CLASS AAA BOYSQUARTERFINALSNo. 10 Jim Thorpe vs. No. 2 SalisburyTIPOFF:Friday, Feb. 19 at Southern Lehigh, 7:30 p.m.COACHES:JT - Jason McElmoyle (second season); SAL - Jason Weaver (eighth season)RECORDS:Jim Thorpe (14-9); Salisbury (19-5)LEADING SCORERS:JT - Rayan Green (13.59 ppg), Brendan Carroll (10.0 ppg), Matt Elmore (9.59 ppg), Chris Micciche (8.59 ppg); SAL - Dylan Belletiere (13.0 ppg), Tevon Weber (10.2 ppg), Jack Reichenbach (9.30 ppg), Blake Jones (7.50 ppg)GAME NOTES:After each team won at home during the regular season, Jim Thorpe broke the trend on Wednesday night as it rallied to beat North Schuylkill on the road, 40-34 ... Last week, Salisbury was defeated by Bangor in the Colonial League final for the second-straight season … Salisbury's Dylan Belletiere is just two points shy of 300 for the season, and leads the Falcons with 102 field-goals-made this year … The Falcons get it done inside the arc as does Jim Thorpe. Just two Salisbury players have drained more than 20 three-pointers this season … Salisbury played two Schuylkill League opponents this year. The Falcons lost to Pottsville 47-27 and defeated Blue Mountain 58-48. Jim Thorpe was a combined 0-4 against Pottsville and Blue Mountain this season. The Olympians lost to the Eagles 49-42 and 47-44. They lost to the Tide 59-31 and 54-27. The teams had one other common opponent as both rolled to easy wins over Northern Lehigh. Salisbury beat the Bulldogs by 18 and 39 points in two regular season meetings. Thorpe posted a 39-point win over NL … The Falcons kicked off the year on a 13-game win streak ... Salisbury is capable of scoring at will, posting over 75 points on three separate occasions during the season. The most points Thorpe scored in a game this season was 71 in the victory over Northern Lehigh.QUOTABLE:"We are just going to take it one game at a time. We have been so focused on North Schuylkill, but we are very excited for the opportunity to play Salisbury. We know they are a very good team, and their record shows that. But we are certainly looking forward to playing them. We have a group of guys that know what is on the line. Against North Schuylkill, they played every possession like it was their last and dove for every loose ball. That could be the difference between winning and losing the game. We have to match that intensity against Salisbury, control the ball and control the tempo. We're excited to have the opportunity to be here and hopefully we can make some noise." - Jim Thorpe head coach Jason McElmoyle.CLASS AAA BOYSQUARTERFINALSNo. 9 Lehighton vs. No. 1 PottsvilleTIPOFF:Friday, Feb. 19 at Minersville, 7 p.m.COACHES:Lehighton - Rich Oertner (fifth season); Pottsville - Dave Mullaney (ninth season)LEADING SCORERS:LEH - Hunter Greene (12.52 ppg), Nick Chambers 10.64 ppg), Damian Mele (9.35 ppg), Steven Jackson (8.91 ppg), Tanner Zwetolitz (8.83 ppg); POTT - Jordan Melochick (13.33 ppg), Jordan Abdo (13.08 ppg), Maldeen Thomas (10.58 ppg), Ian Renninger (7.41 ppg), Patrick Schenk (5.75 ppg).GAME NOTES- Pottsville is a perfect 6-0 against Lehighton dating back to 2013 … The Crimson Tide swept Lehighton in the 2015-16 regular season, 2-0. The first meeting was decided by just nine points. The second bout was a bit more lopsided with the Tide winning, 53-36, although Lehighton was leading that game at halftime … Pottsville won the Schuylkill League championship in impressive fashion last week, toppling both Shenandoah Valley and Blue Mountain by an average of 17.5 points ... Pottsville is the only unbeaten boys team in District 11 … The Indians' nine-point loss in their first meeting with Pottsville is one of just three times this season that the Tide's margin of victory has been under double digits … As efficient as Pottsville is on offense, its defense is quite stingy as well. The Tide have given up just 50+ points once this year, that coming in a double overtime victory against Berks Catholic … Lehighton's balance is one of its best qualities. The Tribe feature four starters who have each scored over 200 points this year. Four of the five starters have also each recorded at least 20 or more three-pointers this season … Lehighton defeated No. 8 Saucon Valley on Tuesday in the first round of the D-11 playoffs, 62-52. Hunter Greene and Damian Mele combined for 30 points during the win while Andre McDowell also reached doubled-figures with 11.QUOTABLE- "During our first regular season meeting with Pottsville, we started out trailing 12-0. But after the slow start we ended up outscoring them in the final three quarters by a point. At our place in the second meeting, we were down by only three with about seven minutes to go and all of a sudden, they took off. Pottsville isn't necessarily a great offensive team, it's actually the defense that wins them games. They probably play the best defense that I've come across - maybe the best man-to-man defense that I've ever faced as a high school coach. We played successful man-to-man against them in our last meeting which kept us competitive. But we were mentally tired in the fourth quarter and they turned the pressure up a bit on us. To beat them, we can't let that happen this time. We also need to limit them to one shot and win the rebounding battle." - Lehighton head coach Rich Oertner.
