Services set for crash victim

Speed played a role in a fatal crash in Summit Hill that took the life of an Albrightsville man over the weekend.

Summit Hill Police Chief Joseph Fittos said Michael Ian Carpenter, 24, was traveling west along East White Bear Drive at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle in the area of 387 E. White Bear Drive. The crash occurred just before 11 p.m. Sunday.Police said the vehicle crossed over into the westbound lane, continuing on the shoulder and shearing a utility pole before becoming airborne. It then struck a tree and flipped onto its roof. Carpenter was ejected and found approximately 40 feet away from the wreck.Carbon County Coroner Robert Miller was called to the scene and pronounced Carpenter dead.Miller said Monday afternoon that he ruled the cause of death as multiple traumatic injuries to the chest.Summit Hill police, fire department and fire police, as well as paramedics were at the scene. The vehicle was towed by Krajcirik's Automotive Towing in Lansford.Carpenter was a 2010 graduate of Jim Thorpe Area High School. He was employed at Mount Pocono Fence Company and in the winter months at Jack Frost Big Boulder Ski Areas.He loved the outdoors and spending time with friends.He was the son of Joan Carpenter-Bensinger and the stepson of Richard R. Bensinger of Albrightsville.Services for Carpenter will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Jim Thorpe.
