Nine TN teams qualify for District 11 playoffs

Believe it or not, the winter sports season is coming to a close .

League playoffs are over and the District 11 basketball playoffs will begin this week.Who will make history this year? Nine of our local teams will have an opportunity to do just that.District 11 action tips off Tuesday night and concludes Feb. 27.On the girls' side in Class A, Weatherly qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2005.The Lady Wreckers' punched their postseason ticket by defeating Meadowbrook Christian in their final regular season contest. Shelby Berger had 27 points in the must-win game and will aim to give her squad its first playoff win since 1996. Weatherly squares off with No. 4 Shenandoah Valley in the first round.Marian is no stranger to the District 11 playoffs and will be the area's lone AA representative. The Fillies were impressive last week in the Schuylkill League playoffs. Led by head coach Paul Brutto, Marian topped Pottsville in the semifinals before coming up short against unbeaten Minersville in the championship game. The Fillies feature just two seniors, but the rest of the younger supporting cast have played their roles this season. Marian has earned the second seed and will battle seventh-seeded Salisbury in the quarterfinals on Friday. In Class AAA, Lehighton earned the eighth seed. The Tribe have a balanced-scoring attack and will clash with top-seeded Southern Lehigh on Saturday at Whitehall. Also representing the Schuylkill League in Class AAA is Jim Thorpe. Sophomore scoring sensation Kayley Kovac leads the young Lady Olympians' team. As the seventh seed, JT will have a tough test against second-seeded Blue Mountain in Saturday's quarterfinals. The Colonial League's Northwestern Lady Tigers are the third area representative in Class AAA. Northwestern lost a ton exceptional talent to graduation last season, but Erika Thomas has taken over the leadership role with a strong senior campaign. The Lady Tigers are the fifth-seed and will dance with Allentown Central Catholic in Saturday's first round. After a strong second half of the season, Pleasant Valley earned the 11th seed in Class AAAA. The Lady Bears will travel to No. 6 Whitehall for a first round game on Tuesday. The boys' side of the spectrum features three teams from the TN area.Marian caught fire after a slow start to the season to earn the fourth seed. Head coach John Patton has a deep rotation and it seems anyone can step up on a given night. With only four teams qualifying in AA, the Colts will get a bye right into the semifinals where they will meet Minersville on Feb. 24.After winning 13 games this season, Lehighton finds itself as the ninth seed in the AAA field. Lehighton's multi-sport athletes will see some familiar faces as the Indians will take on eighth-seeded Saucon Valley in the first round on Tuesday night - this time on the hardwood instead of the gridiron.Jim Thorpe is also in the AAA field. The Olympians earned the 10th seed with 13 wins. Led by high-flying Rayan Green, the Olympians will have their third meeting this season with seventh-seeded North Schuylkill in the first round on Tuesday night.GIRLSClass AQuarterfinalsSaturday, Feb. 20No. 4 Shenandoah Valley vs. No. 5 Weatherly, 6 p.m. at Martz HallNo. 3 Tri-Valley vs. No. 6 Lincoln Leadership, 1 p.m. at MinersvilleNo. 2 Williams Valley vs. No. 7 Salem Christian, 2:30 p.m. at MinersvilleSemifinalsWednesday, Feb. 24No. 1 Mahanoy Area vs. Winner of No. 4 Shenandoah Valley-No. 5 Weatherly, TBAWinner of No. 3 Tri-Valley-No. 6 Lincoln Leadership vs. Winner of No. 2 Williams Valley-No. 7 Salem Christian, TBAChampionshipSaturday, Feb. 27Semifinal round winnersClass AAQuarterfinalsFriday, Feb. 19No. 1 Minersville vs. No. 8 Moravian Academy, 8 p.m. at Martz HallNo. 4 North Schuylkill vs. No. 5 Notre Dame GP, 5 p.m. at Martz HallNo. 3 Palisades vs. No. 6 Pine Grove, 6 p.m. at Southern LehighNo. 2 Marian vs. No. 7 Salisbury, 5:30 p.m. at Blue MountainSemifinalsTuesday, Feb. 23Winner of No. 1 Minersville-No. 8 Moravian Academy vs. Winner of No. 4 North Schuylkill-No. 5 NDGP, TBAWinner of No. 3 Palisades-No. 6 Pine Grove vs. Winner of No. 2 Marian-No. 7 Salisbury, TBAChampionshipFriday, Feb. 26Semifinal round winnersClass AAAQuarterfinalsSaturday, Feb. 20No. 1 Southern Lehigh vs. No. 8 Lehighton, 4 p.m. at WhitehallNo. 4 Allentown Central Catholic vs. No. 5 Northwestern, 1 p.m. at WhitehallNo. 3 Bethlehem Catholic vs. No. 6 East Stroudsburg North, 2:30 p.m. at WhitehallNo. 2 Blue Mountain vs. No. 7 Jim Thorpe, 7:30 p.m. at Martz HallSemifinalsWednesday, Feb. 24Winner of No. 1 Southern Lehigh-No. 8 Lehighton vs. Winner of No. 4 Allentown Central Catholic-No. 5 Northwestern, TBAWinner of No. 3 Bethlehem Catholic-No. 6 ES North vs. Winner of No. 2 Blue Mountain-No. 7 Jim Thorpe, TBAChampionshipSaturday, Feb. 27Semifinal round winnersClass AAAAFirst RoundTuesday, Feb. 16No. 8 Pocono Mountain East vs. No. 9 Williams Allen, 7 p.m. at Pocono Mountain EastNo. 5 Liberty vs. No. 12 Bangor, 7 p.m. at LibertyNo. 6 Whitehall vs. No. 11 Pleasant Valley, 7 p.m. at WhitehallNo. 7 Northampton vs. No. 10 Stroudsburg, 7 p.m., at NorthamptonQuarterfinalsFriday, Feb. 19No. 1 Easton vs. Winner of No. 8 PME-No. 9 William Allen, 7:30 p.m. at CatasauquaNo. 4 Pottsville vs. Winner of No. 5 Liberty-No. 12 Bangor, 7 p.m. at Blue MountainNo. 3 Nazareth vs. Winner of No. 6 Whitehall-No. 11 Pleasant Valley, 6 p.m. at AllenNo. 2 Parkland vs. Winner of No. 7 Northampton-No. 10 Stroudsburg, 6 p.m. at CatasauquaSemifinalsTuesday, Feb. 23Semifinal round winnersChampionshipFriday, Feb. 26Semifinal round winnersBOYSClass ASemifinalsTuesday, Feb. 23No. 1 Lincoln Leadership vs. No. 4 Notre Dame East Stroudsburg, TBANo. 2 Shenandoah Valley vs. No. 3 Medical Academy Charter, TBAChampionshipFriday, Feb. 26Winner of No. 1 Lincoln Leadership-No. 4 NDES vs. Winner of No. 2 Shenandoah Valley vs. No. 3 Medical Academy Charter, TBAClass AASemifinalsWednesday, Feb. 24No. 1 Minersville vs. No. 4 Marian, TBANo. 2 Williams Valley vs. No. 3 Mahanoy Area, TBAChampionshipSaturday, Feb. 27Winner of No. 1 Minersville-No. 4 Marian vs. Winner of No. 2 Williams Valley-No. 3 Mahanoy Area, TBAClass AAATuesday, Feb. 16First RoundNo. 8 Saucon Valley vs. No. 9 Lehighton, 7 p.m. at Saucon ValleyNo. 7 North Schuylkill vs. No. 10 Jim Thorpe, 7 p.m. at North SchuylkillQuarterfinalsFriday, Feb. 19No. 1 Pottsville vs. Winner of No. 8 Saucon Valley-No. 9 Lehighton, 7 p.m. at MinersvilleNo. 4 Allentown Central Catholic vs. Bethlehem Catholic, 7:30 p.m. at Allen HSNo. 3 Blue Mountain vs. No. 6 Notre Dame GP, 6:30 p.m. at Martz HallNo. 2 Salisbury vs. Winner of No. 7 North Schuylkill-No. 10 Jim Thorpe, 7:30 p.m at Southern LehighSemifinalsTuesday, Feb. 23Quarterfinal round winnersChampionshipFriday, Feb. 26Semifinal round winnersClass AAAAWednesday, Feb. 17First RoundNo. 8 Nazareth vs. No. 9 Liberty, 7 p.m. at NazarethNo. 6 Stroudsburg vs. No. 11 Freedom, 7 p.m. at StroudsburgNo. 7 Southern Lehigh vs. No. 10 Whitehall, 7 p.m. at Southern LehighQuarterfinalsSaturday, Feb. 20No. 1 Parkland vs. Winner of No. 8 Nazareth-No. 9 LibertyNo. 4 Emmaus vs. No. 5 William Allen, 6 p.m. at FreedomNo. 3 Pocono Mountain West vs. Winner of No. 6 Stroudsburg-No. 11 Freedom, 6 p.m. at Pleasant ValleyNo. 2 Bangor vs. Winner of No. 7 Southern Lehigh-No. 10 WhitehallSemifinalsWednesday, Feb. 24Quarterfinal round winnersChampionshipSaturday, Feb. 27Semifinal round winners
