Love's in bloom

Roses are red, Violets are blue, flowers are moving fast this weekend and you should too.

What do you need to know?1. Roses are the most popular choice."Smart people start a week in advance," Chrissy Sasso of Jim Thorpe Dee Zines Flowers Sasso said."Everything will be gone this weekend. Everyone wants roses," Bob Everett of Palmerton Bob's Floral Shop said.2. Porvaznik's Flowers will go through 1,500 red and mixed roses this holiday. What goes with them? Six cases of baker fern and 40 bunches of baby's breath. "We will go through 1,500 red and mixed roses," said Megan Andersen of the Lansford store.3. Pink and white lilies are the popular second runner-up, Anderson said.4. What will it cost me? Long-stem roses range from $35 for a half-dozen to $189 for the biggest vase.5. Valentine's Day is Sunday. When are flowers delivered? Flower deliveries and pick ups have been spread out through the week and will continue well into the weekend. "A lot of times men send flowers to the workplace," Sasso said. Friday was the big day for work deliveries, Sasso said.6. This weekend will prove especially challenging, as flowers need to be protected from the frigid weather. "We won't pull them out of the vehicle until someone answers the door," Everett said."The cold weather makes for more work because everything has to be wrapped and the van has to be warmed up," Sasso said.7. Who's last? Shops are expecting the usual purchasing procrastinators. "We always have last minute people calling. But at that point they are at the mercy of what we have in the shop," Sasso said, who expects to only have mixed flower bunches left.8. Don't leave flowers in the car for that special moment. "Our coolers are set for 36-37 degrees, so flowers need to be at least at that temperature or they will freeze," Andersen said.9. Who's the biggest of them all? Valentine's Day is one of the biggest flower holidays of the year, with Mother's Day as a close second. Blooming plants are the typical floral gift for the day dedicated to matriarchs.10. Take care of the roses. If you're one of the lucky ones who received long stem roses, re-cut the stems under running water and change the water in the vase every two days. This process will keep your roses looking great for as long as possible.
