Thorpe student magazine wins award

Jim Thorpe senior students have won national acclaim for The Flame. The student-produced literary magazine competed against hundreds of schools throughout thecountry to win a certificate of excellence in the National Council of the Teachers of English conference.

The NCTE is an organization of English teachers in the country that gather together to discuss issues and ways to improve teaching for future semesters. The contest is open every year to all 50 states. Jim Thorpe has competed for two years in a row."We did well before. A lot of magazines that are submitted don't get a rating. We want to be excellent," said adviser Trudy Miller. The staff for the student-run magazine consists of co-editors Emily Reichard and Luke Carter, who worked on layout; Emily Sailer and Marissa Bourke, who contributed artwork; and Brian DeMarco, who worked as copy editor."I had artwork in Flame, then I was asked to do layout for this year and last," Reichard said.Carter said he became involved his freshman year and helped to coordinate layout for the rated magazine. "Last year they dropped the ball a little bit, and I know a lot about the editing program so I thought I'd help out," he said. The magazine came together to be published annually in the spring of 2005. Everyone on staff has submitted work or put together an edition since the beginning."The name The Flame was chosen for its symbolism, as it not only represents the school's symbol, the torch, but also the flame of creativity that burns within everyone of us," Miller said.It is through Miller's creative writing courses that a lot of the literary content is generated."I love to write," said DeMarco, who has nine written works in the recognized edition.Sailer's submitted artwork served as the cover for the 2014-15 edition. Each submission is due in June, with winners announced the following January. The staff members will be graduated and on their way to college before the results come in."This time we are shooting for Superior. That's the highest rank you can get," Reichard said.
