Jim Thorpe considers a one-way Packer Hill

Packer Hill Avenue in Jim Thorpe Borough could soon be a one-way road.

For the past several months, most recently at Thursday night's workshop, borough council has discussed the idea of only allowing traffic up the hill that leads from Route 209 to "The Heights" near the Carbon County Courthouse Annex. At its regular business meeting next week, council may vote to advertise the ordinance."It's a safety issue," Councilman John McGuire said."It's an especially bad road in the winter. This is really the best thing we can do."Discussion in prior months centered on whether to make the road one way from Route 209, or only start above the county employee parking lot."That would be hard to enforce," Police Chief Joe Schatz told council. "If we stopped people down by Route 209, they'd just say they were in the county parking lot. If you're going to do it, I think you have to make it the entire road."Banning traffic from going down the hill only during winter months was also an option discussed. The move means anyone traveling up Packer Hill Avenue would have to go down Liberty Road to access Route 209."Pulling out on Route 209 from Packer Hill was dangerous and this alleviates that," Schatz said.Borough officials said Thursday night that the majority of county commissioners favor the change.
