Man charged with sexual assault of teen

Israel Gonzalez, 49, of 547 E. Abbott St., Lansford, has been charged with felony counts of aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault, and corruption of minors stemming from an incident which took place at the No. 9 Mine and Museum on July 20.

Gonzalez is free on $50,000 unsecured bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Feb. 24 before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek, Lansford.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Lansford Sgt. Jack Soberick, here's what happened:

A 16-year-old girl and her mother told police that the girl had been sexually assaulted by a man at the mine museum, a popular tourist attraction in Lansford, on July 20.

The girl was interviewed by staff at the Children's Advocacy Center, Scranton, on Aug. 26. She told them she was working as a volunteer and that Gonzalez was in charge of the mine museum.

The assault began, she said, as she was on a ladder putting items on a shelf in an isolated area, and continued after she came down.

Gonzalez was interviewed on Oct. 3 by Officer Jeff Tanner.

He told Tanner the girl had a panic attack while on the ladder and that he had checked her heart rate with his hands. Later, he said, they discussed a gynecological problem she had, and that he had checked her for scar tissue.
