Lehighton man charged with sex assault

A Lehighton man has been charged with several sexual assault charges for incidents that occurred over a decade ago.

Joseph F. Curran II, 35, of 327 N Fifth St., was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge Ed Lewis of Jim Thorpe. However, his hearing has been continued until 1 p.m. March 3.Curran faces charges of aggravated indecent assault; aggravated indecent assault involving a person less than 13 years old; and two counts each of indecent exposure; and counts of indecent assault involving a person less than 13 years old; and one count of corruption of minors. He remains incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000, 10 percent bail.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Detective Scott Prebosnyak of the Lehighton Police Department:On Dec. 10, 2015, the Lehighton Police Department received two child line reports via fax regarding sexual assault, the affidavit says. The listed victim was a minor at the time of the assaults, and there was another minor in another case. Both cases involved Curran. On Dec. 13, the first victim came into the police department to report that she was a victim of sexual assault. Her statement was taken by officer Joel Gulla, and she said at the time of the assaults she was between the ages of 5 and 7. She is currently 20 years old.The victim said that on multiple occasions, she was sexually assaulted bya relative, who was identified as Curran. The victim said she would regularly go over to Curran's residence in the evening. Whena female relative would leave the residence, Curran would take the victim to the basementand touch her inappropriately. On Dec. 16, Prebosnyak asked the victim to come into the police station so that he could interview her in depth, and found her story credible.Prebosnyak then called Curran and left a message at his home to contact him in attempts to interview him, but was told by his legal counsel he wanted to talk to his client before any interview and he would call Prebosnyak back. The attorney never called back.During his investigation, Prebosnyak found that this tactic has been used by Curran in the past in other cases.Due to background investigation and the victim being credible, Prebosnyak charged him.
