Lehighton group donates food, $20,000 to local nonprofits

Organizers behind Activities Unlimited's Sunday night bingo games recently donated $20,000 to local nonprofit organizations in the area.

The group, which meets each Sunday at the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall, donated their games-of-chance proceeds to 10 organizations: Lehighton Area Memorial Library, Palmerton Library Association, Dimmick Memorial Library, Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall, Family Promise, Bo Tkach Foundation, Wounded Warrior Project, Carbon County Friends of Animals, Trinity Food Pantry, and Lehighton Ambulance Association. Each organization received $2,000 and was chosen either for its ties to the area or because its purpose has touched the life of a board member.Activities Unlimited has been donating its proceeds to charitable organizations since it was founded in 1974.But while the group has been supporting local nonprofits for decades, its players are often pleasantly surprised by the magnitude of giving. Activities Unlimited secretary/treasurer Florence Snyder was sure to distribute a list of this year's beneficiaries to its players."Our players love it. We want to keep doing it, and to support the community," she said.Snyder said many of the weekly bingo players have been attending games regularly for years - some as long as 30 years."They're a good group," she said.Bingo players are also encouraged to bring a food donation to the weekly games. Last year, players donated 1,588 items to the Trinity Food Pantry in Lehighton. Donations are gathered at each game and taken to the pantry the next day, and donations will continue to be accepted this year.Bingo at the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall is hosted every Sunday night. The game begins at 6:30 p.m.
