During Monday night's meeting, Weissport Borough Council discussed adding additional officers to the police department.

What started out as concern by council member Greg May for the lack of follow-through with the abandoned vehicles that have been previously monitored by the police department throughout the borough led to discussions under the police and safety committee about adding more officers.As May pointed out, a "couple of the vehicles have been addressed, but some are still parked there."Council directed secretary Jillyan Sterling to reach out to the police officer and follow up with the standing of the unregistered/abandon vehicles that have been previously addressed.Police and safety chairwoman Brenda Leiby opened the discussion about the presence of the police department, or the lack thereof.May said he would like to see more evening patrols in the borough."What is going on between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., which is the last time the officer was out," May noted.Sterling said the last time the officer was working was Jan. 4.Council member Arland Moyer pointed out that the Pennsylvania State Police provide police services when the borough department is not working, however he noted they only enforce vehicle and criminal issues."We need someone to enforce our borough ordinances," Moyer said.Council agreed to look into hiring more part-time officers to accommodate a better coverage of police presence and enforcement. This would be in addition to the department's lone member, officer Richton Penn.Council President Gene Kershner said Mayor Jonathan Troutman would need to work out a schedule between the officers to assure they are not overlapping coverage.
