Verta family suffered previous business loss

For Christopher Verta, owner of the gutted Material Dynamics LLC building in Tuscarora, Sunday's fire was the second time a factory building in his family was destroyed by flames.

On June 9, 1994, a blaze tore through a similar Verta family-owned business, the Bennett Products wax factory on Mahoning Mountain Drive in East Penn Township.Fire officials said the fire started near an incinerator used to burn excess cardboard, pallets and other scrap materials. At the time, the owners believed an employee, a volunteer firefighter, left a cardboard box near the metal incinerator. Heat from the incinerator combusted the box, and fire spread to other boxes and wax stored 50 feet away in the parking lot.Family members estimated a loss of at least $1 million worth of equipment, according to published reports. That business reportedly was operated by Christopher and Ben Verta and owned by their mother, Linda.
