Albrightsville family rides out storm in Florida

By 4 p.m. Saturday about 9,000 flights were canceled due to winter storm Jonas.

The storm affected at least one family from Carbon County who had traveled to Florida for vacation.Brian Rockwell of Albrightsville, his wife and two daughters were set to return from a week's vacation in Florida early Saturday morning, but now their flight has been "canceled, not to be rescheduled."Rockwell was in good spirits Saturday afternoon. He said that he's heard from the airline that the earliest he could return to Lehigh Valley Airport was Wednesday. He was lucky enough to get a flight to Scranton on Monday. When the news came that the original flight was canceled, Rockwell's primary concern was for one of his daughters who has Type 1 diabetes. He said the airline allowed them to bring some extra diabetic supplies, something that not all carriers do.He was also concerned about the weight of the snow on the roof of his home. Two extra days in Florida doesn't sound that bad, but Rockwell said that the weather on the Gulf Coast has been affected by Jonas as well, with high winds making it feel like it's in the 30s."We went to Clearwater yesterday, and it was warm. Then we had a severe thunderstorm, and the temperature just dropped after that. Today it's around 45," he said.Luckily the Rockwells found out early enough on Saturday that they wouldn't be flying, so they were able to add a day to their stay at their hotel."We were lucky enough, they called early, we just extended the hotel we're staying at. But it is pricey," he said.Rockwell said that they would spend Sunday night at a more reasonable hotel before hopefully making their way back on Monday, weather permitting."Hopefully that goes off without any problems," Rockwell said.
