Schuylkill man falls through ice, drowns

A Schuylkill County man fell through thin ice on a creek and drowned on Wednesday.

State police at Schuylkill Haven identified the man as Gary Lee Kembel, 70, of Klingerstown.Troopers said Kembel ventured about 10-15 feet east of the western shoreline of Mahantongo Creek, which is near Main Street in Upper Mahantongo Township. The ice wasabout 2 inches thick.Kembel broke through the ice and became almost entirely submerged. He attempted to pull himself from the creek but was unsuccessful. Kembel was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:39 p.m. by deputy coroner Joseph Pothering of Minersville. Troopers put the time frame of the incident between 10 a.m. and 2:04 p.m. when Kembel’s body was found.
