It will cost Northern Lehigh School District nearly $500,000 to replace several sections of roofing at one of its elementary schools.
By a unanimous measure, the school board on Monday agreed to enter into a contract with Weatherproofing Technologies to replace four sections of the main roof and the lower gym roof at Peters Elementary. The project is through the Keystone Purchasing Network at a cost of $489,871, and is to be paid from the capital reserve account. That action came after the board authorized administration to transfer $490,000 from the general fund to the capital reserve account to cover the cost of the roofing project.Greg Derr, director of support services and transportation, previously said there's a third section of roof at Peters Elementary that is from 1991 which is a rubber roof with ballast on it.Derr said the roof is at the age where the rubber is losing its elasticity, and as it shrinks, it pulls away from the curbing and the seams start to separate. He said it was time to look to replace it before it becomes a bigger project.Peters Elementary was constructed in Friedens in 1954.
