Man admits deadly DUI

A Danielsville man on Thursday admitted to driving under the influence and on the wrong side of a highway when he crashed into another car, killing a Washington Township man and seriously injuring the 4-year-old son of the man’s girlfriend.

Michael J. McCandless-Dietrich, 24, pleaded guilty to felony homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, driving under the influence — highest rate (his blood alcohol content was 0.16 percent, twice the legal limit), and felony aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI.All of the other charges were withdrawn.Judge Kimberly McFadden ordered a pre-sentence investigation before handing down punishment, according to Pennsylvania online court documents.The crash happened on Dec. 21, 2014, at the intersection of Routes 145 and 248 in Lehigh Township, according to an affidavit of probable cause. Dietrich was charged by Lehigh Township police officer Douglas A. Geisner with felony homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence; homicide by vehicle; involuntary manslaughter; three counts of recklessly endangering another person; driving under the influence; DUI — highest rate (his blood alcohol content was above 0.16 percent); failure to yield right; driving the wrong way; disregarding traffic lanes; driving over the divider; four counts of failing to obey traffic-control devices; two counts of felony aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI; two counts of aggravated assault by vehicle; reckless driving; and two counts of careless driving.Dietrich posted $100,000 percentage bail.According to the affidavit, Geisner was called to the intersection at 2:31 a.m. Dec. 21. He saw two vehicles in the eastbound lanes of Route 248. They had collided head-on and were heavily damaged and the drivers of both vehicles were entrapped.He determined a 2001 Ford F150 pickup driven by Dietrich had been traveling west in the eastbound lanes when it struck a 1995 GMC Yukon that had been traveling east.Dietrich was flown to St. Luke’s University Hospital in Bethlehem, while his passenger was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Allentown, by ambulance.Firefighters and rescue workers reported smelling alcohol on Dietrich’s breath as they cut him out of the truck. They found a Mike’s Tropical party pack and an open 1.75 liter bottle of Crown Russian vodka in the truck.Wieder was pronounced dead at the scene by the Northampton County coroner’s office.A front-seat passenger, Chelsea Sergeant, was flown to St. Luke’s with a lacerated liver, shattered pelvis, broken arm, broken jaw, and facial cuts and lacerations.Sergeant’s son, who was in the back seat, was taken by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital with a broken back, lacerated liver and a broken arm.
