Canaries too quick for Bears
The scouting report was accurate.
William Allen's basketball team is quick, aggressive and athletic.Pleasant Valley head coach Matt Gould prepared his team for their opponent's pressure defense. As the first 16 minutes of the contest panned out, however, the Canaries utilized their quickness, agility and unselfishness to race out to a 55-20 lead at the break, en route to the relatively easy win."We knew what they were going to be like," Gould said afterward. "I had the guys prepare for the pressure, but we were timid. If we typically come into a game outmatched, we make up for it with our hard work. But tonight, it just seemed as if the effort or focus wasn't there."Without the Bears' Elijah Munford in the lineup, who is one of the main ballhandlers, the shuffle of the lineup forced some other players to take on a role they may not have been comfortable with. However, the Canaries proved to be too tough for the Bears in this one, as they consistently forced bad decisions, filled the passing lanes, and transformed Pleasant Valley miscues into high percentage shots. With the 82-37 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory, Allen improves to 7-3 overall, while the Bears drop to 1-9.Chris Barker got the first bucket of the night for the Bears, but the victors immediately went on a 10-0 run to set the tone."We had some different players start out the game tonight for us, due to some kids missing practices here and there," Allen head coach Doug Snyder said. "But I was very glad with the way those players responded in the starting positions for us tonight. Because of that opportunity they got to start, they came out with some real ferocity, it seemed."In the first frame, the winners sandwiched that 10-0 run with a 9-0 run a little later to take the 24-10 lead after one. Lucas Schaffner put in six for the Bears to keep them within reach.Jvon Winslow's 11, and seven apiece from Tyrese Martin and Carlos Gutierrez aided the winners to their huge halftime swell.Following the intermission, any thoughts of a comeback were dashed as Martin and teammate Talek Williams teamed up for another 10-0 run, making it 65-20 with five minutes to go in the third.Eventually, both coaches took their opportunities to clear their benches, allowing the younger players to get their playing time.Allen also prevailed in the JV contest, taking a 57-45 preliminary win, as Tyreek Bell put in 17 for the Canaries, and the junior Bears got nine from Jahad Burks.ON THE BREAK ... The Canaries benefited from their ability to run the fast break, as in the first half, alone, they managed to score 22 of thei 55 points off of layups following Bear turnovers. With under four minutes remaining in the second period, Allen's Martin stuffed two consecutive one-handed dunks on the break, sending the crowd on tap into a frenzy.SILVER LINING ... Coach Gould was content with his youthful lineup, saying, "We're playing some young guys out there, so that's always a good thing, moving forward. Also, our senior leadership was nice tonight, too, with Lucas Shaffner playing tough tonight, fought hard against their size and athleticism.ALLENMartin 8-1-4-17, Gutierrez 8-1-1-18, Polanco 0-0-0-0, Fargas 2-2-2-6, Wyatt 5-0-0-10, Cedeno Morales 0-0-0-0, Winslow 5-1-1-14, Stewart 1-0-0-2, Obade 0-0-0-0, Lopez 3-0-0-6, Williams 3-3-4-9, Feliciano 0-0-0-0.
