A Nesquehoning councilman has resigned his position.
During borough council's reorganization meeting on Monday, the board voted to regretfully accept the resignation of Michael Sniscak Jr., who was currently serving his second term on council. The resignation was effective Jan. 1.Council President David Hawk said that Sniscak cited personal reasons for his decision to resign.Councilman Don DeMarco asked that the board send Sniscak a thank-you for his years of service on council.Sniscak, a Democrat, is a lifelong resident of Nesquehoning and a graduate of Panther Valley High School.He served in the United States Army and worked toward obtaining a degree in political science through Ohio State. He then taught career servicemen to successfully obtain their GED.Following an honorable discharge, Sniscak taught at the Packerton Special Education Unit; and then as a vocational rehabilitation counselor with the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, commonwealth of Pennsylvania.Sniscak has served a total of six years on council, serving a four-year term from 2008 and then winning a second term in 2014 after losing re-election in 2011.He served as chairman for the borough's public safety committee, and as a member on the streets committee.Council will now accept letters of interest to fill the vacant seat until the close of business on Jan. 26. Letters should be sent to the borough office at 114 W. Catawissa St.A new member will be appointed at council's monthly meeting on Jan. 27.The person who fills the vacancy will serve in that capacity until the end of 2017, when Sniscak's term was up.
