A clear-cut business, Mahoning Valley Glass

Mahoning Valley Glass is housed in an inconspicuous shop off Blakeslee Boulevard, with a small neon sign announcing their presence from the road.

After more than 40 years at the same location, a large sign or fancy flags aren't really necessary."We've been here for so long that people know us," said Diane Smith, who owns the business with her husband, Mahlon. "It's a steady work."Mahoning Valley Glass was opened in 1972 by the late Jim and Irene Serfass, who moved from New Jersey to Carbon County after their retirement. They chose to reinvent themselves after retiring and opened the glass shop. When the Jim and Irene Serfass finally retired for good in 1988, their daughter and son-in-law took over the business.Work has remained steady and much the same as it has been for the past 50 years, Diane reports. As long as there are cars, there will be car windows that need to be repaired. The business repairs and replaces automotive glass and repairs chips in windshields. Work is done on site in the business's garage. They custom-cut and install glass tabletops and mirrors in their workshop, and have also installed local storefront windows. Mahoning Valley Glass can also replace screening in screen doors. While work remains steady, the owners pride themselves in remaining flexible and working quickly to meet customers' needs."We have a quick turnaround. A lot of the time when someone will bring in a screen window, we can do it while they wait," Diane said.
