Lehighton boys cruise by Northern Lehigh

What do you get when you pair Lehighton's Nick Chambers and Hunter Greene?

A well-tuned rebounding machine. The colossal tandem of bigs combined for 20 rebounds through three and a half quarters of action during the first round of the Slatington Rotary tournament against Northern Lehigh. The Indians' great ability to create turnovers was also on display during a convincing 72-27 victory over the Bulldogs."Their length and physicality was too much for us," said Northern Lehigh head coach Jeff Miller. "We tried to set a high screen up top so we could at least get into our offense. We figured once we got into our offense, we would be alright. Unfortunately, their physicality forces you so far away from the bucket."Although Northern Lehigh looked better against the pressure defense in the second period, it committed nine turnovers in the first frame that allowed Lehighton to jump out with a 7-0 spurt and never look back."We just played methodically," noted Lehighton head coach Rich Oertner. "We had a huge height advantage, and we had our seniors playing against ninth and tenth graders."We didn't want to give them an opportunity to stay in the game, that's why we came out and did it right away. If it didn't work right away, we would have backed out if it and came back to it later on. I just didn't want them to hang around; all of the sudden a team thinks they can play with you, and then you have a game."Chambers had a game-high 15 points, but didn't score until the second quarter when he dunked with authority in the open floor. He then went on a tear and scored 11 points in the third quarter to put the game well out of reach.Andre McDowell has been running the show at point guard for Oertner, and he seems to be getting better and better every time he hits the court."Andre (McDowell) is an awesome point guard," said Oertner. "He's one of the best I've had. We've had a lot of good ones, but he knows the game and passes the ball on offense, and just gets the ball to whoever is open and that's the bottom line."Evan Meixsell led Northern Lehigh with eight points, and Joe Egan was workman-like in the paint in his attempts to fend off the Lehighton bigs all night."We don't have the size, so we have to scrap," said Miller. "Unfortunately when we have to go to our bench, we're thin- thin in stature as well. Joe (Egan) did a nice job, but he gets tired with all of the action down there. We'll keep working and battling. They get down on themselves very easy and we're trying to get them over that. That will come with maturity and eventually happen."MORE PRAISE FOR McDOWELL … The first-year starting point guard tallied ten points, including a three-pointer, and made just about every correct pass one could make during the win.Chambers explained, "Honestly it's great, because you know he's going to try and get you the ball each time. It's a great feeling that he's a pass-first point guard and he cares about his teammates more than he does himself."NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE… Northern Lehigh had four rebounds in the first quarter and they all belonged to Joe Egan.Miller said "I was happy with the way we scrapped. I keep telling them; we're not going to quit. Let's go out and win the quarter, each quarter. Let's go out and battle hard."NEXT UP… Lehighton will take on Palmerton in the championship on Tuesday night, as Northern Lehigh and Jim Thorpe will do battle in the consolation game."Jim Thorpe is very athletic and long, hopefully their big guy will miss the bus," Miller jokingly said. "But, we'll scrap and claw, and hopefully put the ball in the basket. We struggle so much on offense that it puts a lot of pressure on our defense."LEHIGHTONLawler 1-0-0-2, Troxell 0-0-0-0, Carpenter 0-0-0-0, Schaeffer 1-2-2-4, McDowell 4-1-2-10, Crum 0-0-0-0, Stoffey 0-0-0-0, Zwetolitz 2-0-0-4, Jackson 4-5-7-13, Mele 4-0-0-10, Howland 1-0-0-3, Venuto 0-0-0-0, Chambers 7-1-5-15, Greene 4-2-3-11.
