No tax increase in Lehighton budget
Lehighton residents won't have to dole out more money next year on their municipal taxes.
By a unanimous vote, borough council on Monday agreed to leave the 2016 municipal tax rate in check.The $4,350,133 spending plan will leave the tax rate in line at 7.5 mills.For a homeowner with a home valued at $100,000, which would be assessed at $50,000, they will again pay $375 to the borough next year in property taxes.Councilman Darryl Arner commented that he was pleased to see that everyone was diligent with their budgets.Residents saw no increase in their municipal taxes this year as a result of the $4.1 million general fund spending plan left the tax rate unchanged.The last time residents saw their municipal tax rate raised was in 2014, when council approved a 1-mill increase.Other actionCouncil:• Agreed to spend $16,275 on Rocky's Doors and Windows proposal for seven replacement garage doors for the borough's Public Works Garage.• Did not act on Lehighton Area School District's request to reduce building permit fees for middle school and high school projects.• Adopted a resolution to set the 2016 rate of contribution to the Police Pension Fund.• On a 6-1 vote, with Councilman John Kreitz opposed, agreed to adopt a resolution setting salaries of nonuniform employees for fiscal year 2016.• Adopted an ordinance to set the tax levy rate for fiscal year 2016.• Approved a proposal from Levkulik for revision to drawings for the Light & Power fifth bay fit out.• Approved the 2016 reappointment list as follows: Allen Young, Manny DaCosta, and Donald Hahn, Planning Commission; Alton Steigerwalt, Larry Stern, and Floyd Brown, sewer authority; David Harleman, water authority; Ryan Saunders, zoning hearing board; and Brian Schnell and Allen Young, property maintenance board.• Adopted a garbage ordinance.• Approved a resolution updating the fee schedule.• Approved invoices to be paid before Dec. 31.• Approved a lease with the Carbon County Area Agency on Aging.• Approved the winners of the 2015 Christmas Light Contest.• Agreed to hold the third annual 5K Earth Day/Hippie Run/Walk on April 23.• Agreed to advertise the 2016 meeting dates.
