Nativity scenes display a big hit in Jim Thorpe

Nativity scenes from around the world were on display Sunday in Jim Thorpe.

The eighth annual Creche/Nativity Display at St. John's Lutheran Church, in the heights section of the borough, was a hit for new and old visitors alike."This is our first time, and it's really an excellent display," said Bill Eckert, of Jim Thorpe, who viewed the scenes with his wife, Christine. The items are made from a variety of materials such as pewter, tin, cloth, ceramic, wood, beeswax and more.In its first year, the display attracted about 100 pieces. Last year, around 500 nativities were on display."This year we had 532 on display," said Barbara Strohl, a member of the church who volunteered at the display on Sunday. "We have a table up front that is just for new submissions this year."The event was open Saturday and Sunday. Guests could not only view the Nativity scenes, but also enjoyed cookies and punch inside the church."Saturday was a really busy day for us," said volunteer Beverly Vincler. "We had around 140 people here."Returning guest Marianne Boyd, of Tamaqua, said she enjoys seeing what is new each year."I'm always amazed at how this continues to grow each year," she added. This year, a nativity scene featuring Charlie Brown and the gang from "Peanuts" was a first time submission from Al and Diane Luedtke. The items on display come from all over the world."Some people pick up the scenes when they travel, some go to auctions, and many just have them as family heirlooms," Strohl said.
