Schuylkill Township keeps taxes level for 2016

Schuylkill Township residents will not see an increase in their municipal tax rate next year.

The township's board of supervisors this week approved the 2016 budget with no increase.With anticipated revenues of $421,723, and total expenditures of $410,655, next year's spending plan will leave the tax rate at 10.22 mills.Receipts neededAlso on Wednesday, board solicitor Michael Greek said he has received no response to a certified letter sent to former secretary Jaime Moore.The letter requested petty cash receipts necessary for the audit at the end of the year.Hired Jan. 6, Moore was dismissed by supervisors at their meeting in July. At that meeting, supervisors ratified a decision they'd made during an executive session June 12. Supervisors declined to elaborate on the reason for the change, saying it was a personnel issue.Other business• Chairman Charles Hosler noted that millings had been placed on Porter Street to address a problem brought to the board's attention at the November meeting by Tuscarora resident Connie Hacker.• Vice-Chairperson Christine Verdier reported the dates for the 2016 Council of Government meetings. She also noted that the Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Committee will be holding their annual Breakfast with Santa on Saturday.• The PA Department of Health will be providing flu shots by appointment in Pottsville on Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Verdier said. The shots will be available for a nominal fee which may be waived. More information is posted on the window outside of the building.• The PLGIT Procurement Card process is still on hold pending completion of the 2014 audit. Verdier said that she expects the audit to be finalized by the end of the month.• The Tuscarora Waterline CDBG grant project is nearing completion. The board met with a project engineer to discuss the possibility of connecting a part of the loop that was left out due to lack of funding. There are plans to pave the project area; cold patch will be utilized for the immediate future.• A noise ordinance is set to be drafted and made available to the public for review at a later date.• Marian Catholic High School has requested to use the township baseball field as its home field for the 2016 season. Concerns over scheduling exist since several teams use the field already. Tuscarora resident Jessica Tirpak, wife of Coach Greg Tirpak, noted that, "Right now everything (scheduling) is done online." When asked whether she thought allowing the township to prepare the schedule would resolve the issue, she agreed that it might.• Verdier's term will come to a close at the end of the year and several residents voiced their appreciation for her service.
