3 part-time Mahoning Twp. officers resign

Three part-time Mahoning Township officers have submitted letters of resignation following the reorganizing of the police force.

The supervisors board voted in early November to cut part-time officers and replace those patrol hours with a new full-time officer, bringing the officer count to six along with the chief. With the departure of Dane O'Brien, Chris Ritter and Kyle Kohler, three 15-year-old handguns will be traded in for new patrol vehicle shotguns."They're at the end of their service life," Chief Audie Mertz said. The matter of old police equipment was the topic of discussion for two more items: the unused DUI trailer and the out-of-commission 2002 Crown Victoria police cruiser."When I last talked to Audie, there was nothing in the Blue Book that would give us a price," Chairman John Wieczorek said of the trailer. "It's never used; it's still waiting for the maiden voyage."The board agreed to look into the matter of getting a rough estimate before advertising the sale of the trailer. The Crown Vic will be donated to the fire department for the crew to practice rescue techniques and test out the hydraulic Jaws of Life equipment."It gives them a chance to practice with their equipment," Wieczorek said. "Once they have exhausted all the practice, we can just scrap it."
