Trio of seniors will lead Panther wrestling team
Some people were simply born with leadership skills.
A 2015 Panther squad that features 13 sophomores will lean heavily on a core of experienced, talented seniors to pass the torch and lead this year's team."They lead in different ways," said Panther Valley head coach Timothy Robb or his three seniors."Darren (Goida) is the silent type who always does what he has to do. He was involved with a good group of kids that were his drilling partners, and he's done a great job passing it off to the (Kennedy) twins."Ali Capobianco is another senior who has a bit of a different style than Goida."Ali is more of a vocal leader," explained coach Robb. "He doesn't like to lose at anything, if you're playing tiddlywinks, he has tow in. If he's standing next to you, he has to be taller than you. We did a lot of tournament wrestling this summer. It's hard with all of the multi-sport athletes, but whenever I had something, the kids showed up."Dylan Moyer is the third multi-sport senior athlete on the PV squad. Moyer was one of five Panthers who were regional qualifiers last year.Robb said, "I have those three seniors that are tough, they've been led well, and now they're returning that. If you tell them to run, they'll run. If you tell them to do push-ups, they'll do them. Because otose guys, over the next couple of years, these (younger) guys will be solid. I can walk away and I generally know they'll be working hard (at practice). It isn't always the case in previous years."Hunter and Tanner Kennedy are two sophomores that are on the rise and made a splash last year. Tanner (Kennedy) qualified for regionals last year, and Robb said both of them had a great offseason."For the most part, we're just looking to get better at wrestling," said the PV coach. "Honestly, they work hard and I haven't had any problems with work ethic. We improved greatly the last two years; we've qualified three kids each year. This year, we want to qualify five or six, and I think we can do it. It's just a matter of staying healthy."Xander Scolutis-Kern's name will be mentioned a lot, as he was just one match away from a regional qualification last season."We're solid in the middle, but we're hurting at the beginning and the end," explained Robb. "Right now we don't have a six-pounder. We have a heavyweight, but he's a light kid who's a freshman, he isn't ready yet. But we're definitely solid through the middle. Dual-meet wise we're a good team, but we have a couples of holes. Real good teams don't have holes and we have them."Robb likes what he sees out of this year's group, but noted that the Schuylkill League is certainly some stiff competition."We're going to be fun to watch. The league is as good as it's been in the past 20 years, but we're looking to stay healthy, be completive all season long. We'd love to compete for the league; we know it's going to be a handful."
