Ecumenical Christmas cantata to be held Sunday in Lehighton

Over 100 voices will join in song on Sunday, the first week of Advent, for Zion UCC's ecumenical Christmas cantata.

The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Zion UCC, Second and Iron streets, Lehighton. It is free to the public, but a free will offering will be accepted.The cantata features a choir comprised of singers from churches, groups and schools throughout Carbon County and beyond, as well as a 23-piece orchestra.The cantata combines traditional Christmas music with new contemporary songs and beautiful and thought provoking readings. Narrators for the evening are Deacon Evans, Kathy Long and Judy Harris. Vocal soloists include Brent Harris and Shannon Frycklund.The group has been getting together one to two times a week since the end of September in preparation for the cantata. Young and "not so young" alike have blended their voices to create this musical.With Michael W. Smith's well-known classic song as the centerpiece, "All Is Well" provides songs of hope and celebration for the season. This musical is written by multiple Dove Award-winners, Dennis and Nan Allen.The message for the evening is amidst a sea of chaos and uncertainty in this world, Jesus is the source of true and lasting hope, joy and peace.The cantata books for the performance were purchased by Barry Shupp in memory of longtime Zion UCC choir member, Shirley Wentz. The orchestration was purchased by The Daughter's of Zion who are Zion UCC's quilting group.In addition to the cantata, Zion's Festival Orchestra will present several pieces of Christmas music including "What Child is This," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "O Holy Night," music from "The Polar Express" and more.Cindy Mack will preside at Zion's grand pipe organ. The Rev. Dr. Jennifer Bannerman, Zion UCC's new pastor, will offer prayer and scripture readings.The cantata is under the direction of Bradly R. Cressley, director of music at Zion UCC.
