North cruises to victory
SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - A year ago, snow engulfed the region and the Annual Schuylkill County Football Coaches Association Senior All-Star Turkey Bowl got pushed back to June.
Wednesday evening at Rotary Field, the weather cooperated. But it was Team Jungle from the North that caused problems.Led by Mahanoy Area quarterback Mason Ryan, who was named his team's MVP, it was the North that engulfed Team South Ortho, 35-14."Total fun," said Ryan after he scored one of the five touchdowns for Team Jungle. "To play with all this talent, wow, it was pretty special."Part of the special talent on display was Wyatt "The Comet" Clements from Lehighton, who led his team with 83 yards rushing and a touchdown on just on seven carries. But Clements just one of many area players who came up with big performances for the North team, which included seniors from Lehighton, Jim Thorpe, Tamaqua, Panther Valley, Mahanoy Area, Shenandoah and North Schuylkill."I loved it," said Jim Thorpe's very underrated and talented Kevin Vitti, who at 6-2, 230 pounds is going to make some college coach happy. Vitti, a fullback/linebacker, hit the end zone for the game's first score and finished with 42 yards rushing."It was a privilege to go out and play with everyone," continued Vitti. "Here I am playing with everyone that I played against throughout my entire high school career. It was neat."The North team was coached by Lehighton's Tom McCarroll."We had only Sunday to practice," said McCarroll, who led Lehighton to one of its best seasons in history, en route to capturing its first Anthracite Football League title, and playing for the District 11 Class AAA championship."Holy cow, this was great. Did you see the talent we had," McCarroll said. "You see these kids do it all year long, and to put them on the same field, it's unbelievable. The juices were going."Surprisingly the one practice session produced some pretty darn good results, especially from Team Jungle, one of two sponsors for the event."When you have athletes like we have, they pick things up pretty quickly," said McCarroll. "I wasn't surprised (the way we scored). It is fun for all of us, not just the players, but the coaches and the (coaches association)."The game's biggest run came from another Mahanoy Area standout. Lenny Delusky, who scooted 51 yards for a touchdown. The passing game also was clicking for the North as Lehighton quarterback Tyler Cann hit Indian teammate Erik Skrincosky for a touchdown pass that snapped an early 7-7 tie."It was a good time," Skrincosky said. "We drew up a couple of plays in the huddle, on-the-spot type thing."Also a big part of the North passing attack were Jim Thorpe wideouts Jordan McElmoyle (two catches, 39 yards) and Robbie Geisinger (two catches, 49 yards).MVPs… Ryan edged Cann for the most votes from Team Jungle. The South's player was massive 6-4, 280-pound lineman Jonathan Ege of Blue Mountain. The fun thing, Ege got to play linebacker at one point.BIG NUMBERS … North's rich talent showed up in droves. Team Jungle amassed a whopping 333 yards rushing, and another 103 passing.LOCAL STARS .. In addition to the afore mentioned area players, also part of the North roster were Jim Thorpe's Rob Heller, Colton Hurley and Greg Palmer; Lehighton's Tegan Durishin, Nick Chambers and Xander Smith; Panther Valley's Kyle Emmert, Luke Hunsicker, Nate Miller, Dylan Moyer and Anthony Vavra; and Tamaqua's Bud Moyer, Tyler Andrews, Jake Marcolla, Matt Belzner and Kyle OliphantMIA … Because Marian's is still part of the PIAA State playoffs, the Colts' Aaron DeAngelo, Ryan Malarkey, Hunter Nause, KJ Snerr and Josh Skotek were unable to play.
