Colts, Lancers peaking at right time

If momentum truly carries over from one week to the next, Marian picked its best week to play a complete game of football during last Friday's 33-0 District 11 championship rout of Tri-Valley.

"The true all around story of last week's game was the play of the offensive and defensive line," explained Marian head coach Stan Dakosty. "K.J. (Snerr) had a great game, the holes were there - it was a complete football game. Winning a district championship is a dream of any high school football player. I'm so happy for our coaches and more for our players. The support we had from the Marian crowd and community was tremendous."Appearing in a state playoff game for the first time since 2007, the Colts will travel to Germantown High School on Friday to take on Bishop McDevitt (6-6, 1-3) of the Philadelphia Catholic League."They're a very athletic team who reminds me of Pius X," said the Marian coach. "We're going to play our game, they're going to play theirs. We need to play disciplined defense because they (Bishop McDevitt) are really dangerous with the play action pass. They're a much better team than what their record shows."Bishop McDevitt snuck into postseason play with four regular season wins. Although the Lancers are also in Class A, they play nothing but gigantic-sized schools and stiff competition during the regular season - there wasn't another Class A school on their schedule this year."We've seemed to hit our stride at the right time of the year," explained Bishop McDevitt head coach Pat Manzi."We've been playing good, we have good team speed and we've been able to make some big plays. The key factor is our line getting better and they've been maturing over the last month of the season. We only have one senior lineman on each side of the ball. We're a resilient bunch, we went through some tough times, but we kept battling and reached our ultimate goal of getting into the playoffs. It's not easy to regroup after you get beat, but these kids have the determination and always kept fighting."The Colts will have to play well in all three phases of the game, as they did during last week's win.Dakosty's defense has played extremely well down the stretch during Marian's postseason push, as a plethora of Colts are positively contributing.Snerr had an impressive performance on offense last week, but also chipped in 10 tackles -as did Kyle Plesch. Josh Skotek's 98-yard fumble recovery changed the entire tempo of the game, and junior defensive end Gunnar Rehrig led the team with a dozen tackles. Aaron DeAngelo leads Marian with five interceptions, but he might be a bigger factor on the offensive side of the ball on Friday."We moved him to split end, and he's been a dominant one - one of the best in the area," said Dakosty. "Him and Ethan (Kuczynski) have a certain connection. He's a great young man and a very hard worker. This is Ethan's team; all of our playmakers have confidence in him and they're all on the same wavelength."The Colts' last state playoff win was in 2000, but they'll be looking to change that on Friday night.Dakosty said, "We measure things here by how you win championships," Dakosty said. "I'm very happy for this senior class, last week was their third championship that they've played in. We truly appreciate the support from the Marian family and community, and we're going to support the AFL and District 11 as best as we can."
