Don't forget military service dogs this season

There is a very different kind of soldier working in Iraq. Although they walk on four legs and their main tool is their nose, they are an important part of the team.

Specialized service dogs keep our troops out of harm's way. These dogs are trained specially for military operations. Like all working dogs, they love their work, but working in a war zone isn't exactly a walk in the park. They work to find firearms, ammunition and explosives during various missions. These dogs have the ability to use their nose to find danger. There isn't a lot of room for mistakes in a job like this and the dogs rarely, if ever, make them. The dogs are very well-trained, working reliably on and off leash. Their concentration is intense. They take their job of protecting their handlers and others very seriously. They aren't meant to replace soldiers, but rather to perform duties that a human simply isn't capable of doing.Specialized service dogs are helping to keep our soldiers safer. This holiday season, when you're thinking good thoughts for our soldiers or considering sending some goodies their way, don't forget the dogs. Military dogs believe in Santa too.Santa Paws Kause is a local campaign to provide treats for these canine soldiers. U.S. Army regulations say all donated treats must have a Made in America label, such as Hill's Science brand and Greenies products. Toys must be durable and contain no stuffing, such as rope toys and tennis balls.Help us send gifts to our brave four legged soldiers by dropping off your donations at the Times News offices in Lehighton or Tamaqua. Due to postal deadlines, please drop off your donations no later than Dec. 1.
