Marian sweeps Sacred Heart
SHILLINGTON - For the second straight year, Marian faced Country Day School of the Sacred Heart in the PIAA Class A quarterfinals.
And for the second consecutive season, the Fillies walked away with a win.Utilizing a distinct size advantage, Marian swept Sacred Heart 25-22, 25-13, 25-17 to advance to the state semifinals for the fourth consecutive year.Despite sweeping the Lions 25-20, 25-12, 25-9 in the quarters a year ago, Fillies' head coach John Fallabel was only concerned with how his team performed. And he liked what he saw."I don't remember them from last year. I remember my girls," Fallabel said. "I look at my team and I want my team to perform (well) so I pay attention to what's going on on my side. I'm happy with what happened on my side of the court."Senior middle hitter Abigail Stankiewitch provided one of the many highlights for Marian (20-2). Stankiewitch achieved her 900th kill during the match, adding another milestone to her storied career."I knew I was going to get it sometime today," said Stankiewitch, who finished with 17 kills and is now at 908 for her career. "I'm very proud of my team for helping me get there."In addition to Stankiewitch, Maureen Kloap had a big game for the Fillies, tallying 16 kills to go along with a team-high 19 digs, while Jasmine Mooney recorded seven kills, 13 digs and four aces. The performances were simply too much for the Lions (17-9) to overcome."My dad, who was a soccer player, is a big sports guy and he told me that you can win on defense," said Sacred Heart head coach Michelle Gatta. "And we almost did."But they (Marian) touched everything. We just couldn't put the ball down. Our offense was there, but they're a great defensive team, too. … It was a tough match in the middle."Sacred Heart, which captured the District 1 title before sweeping District 12 champion MaST Charter in the first round, pushed the Fillies in the first set.The Lions erased a 9-2 deficit, and took their first lead at 13-12.But the advantage was short-lived as the Fillies immediately tied the score on the next point and never trailed the rest of the set, withstanding a Sacred Heart rally that wiped out 24-18 Marian lead before coming up three points short. The momentum carried into the second set, as the Fillies raced out to a 14-2 lead and the Lions never got closer than eight points.Sacred Heart got as close as 18-15 in the third set before Marian pulled away, going on a 4-0 run with Danielle Spillman at the service line. The Fillies closed it out shortly after that. With the win, Marian will now get ready for Tuesday's semifinal match against District 5 champion North Star, which defeated York Catholic 25-22, 25-15, 25-21 in the quarters. The Lady Cougars are 24-0 and haven't dropped a set all season. But it's a challenge Fallabel, and his team, are ready for."They're the No. 1 (Class A) team in the state. They're better than us," Fallabel said. "We're going in as an underdog and I love it."They're a really good western Pennsylvania team with tall girls that hit the ball really hard and can play very good volleyball."ACCLAIM FOR ANTIGA … Fallabel praised Miranda Antiga for her play Saturday. "I'm really proud Miranda Antiga. (She had) seven attacks, three kills, .429 hitting percentage," the coach said of the junior. "She played relaxed, she did a great job today, and I'm so happy for her."ROLLING ON … Marian's victory over Sacred Heart extended its winning streak to 19 consecutive matches.FAMILIAR FOE … In addition to last year's win, Marian also defeated Sacred Heart 25-17, 25-4, 25-19 in the 2012 PIAA quarterfinals.
