Indians roll into title game

Lehighton does many things well on the football field.

Catching the ball has to be somewhere near the top of that list.On Saturday night in the District 11 Class AAA semifinals, the Indians hauled in 15 passes - 11 on offense and four on defense - to help gain a decisive 27-7 victory over Blue Mountain. The win keeps Lehighton's record perfect at 11-0 and sends the team into the district championship game, where it will face undefeated Saucon Valley (11-0)."They really hurt us throwing the football," said Eagle head coach Cory Mabry. "I thought we had great coverage but their receivers went up and made great plays.""My receivers ... made some great catches over the middle," said Indian quarterback Tyler Cann. "They made me look good tonight."Cann tossed a pair of touchdowns, one to Cody Scherer to open the game's scoring and another to Tegan Durishin, who hauled in a bullet between three defenders at the end of the third frame. In all, Cann (11-of-22 for 174 yards) connected with six different receivers."We have a ton of confidence in our kids and we have a diverse play book," said Lehighton mentor Tom McCarroll. "The story of our year is who's going to make a play this week. (Nick) Chambers went down early ... and Cody Scherer stepped in and made some big plays. We have a ton of playmakers and this week it was kind of his turn."On the Tribe's second possession, Scherer got past the defense and Cann hit him in stride for a 37-yard hookup that gave the hosts a 7-0 lead.Lehighton's second score also came through the air, but in a different way. The Indian defense, which forced six turnovers, received a pick-six from Wyatt Clements. The senior linebacker stepped in front of a Mason Freed offering midway through the second period and rambled 35 yards to push the margin to 13-0."We knew that they did a tight end pop," said Clements. "We repped that a lot this week. I saw the tight end release and no one was covering him so I went underneath and saw the quarterback throw it. After that I just wanted to get in the end zone."While the Indians didn't always capitalize on those turnovers, the miscues kept Blue Mountain's offense frustrated. Even when the Eagles (9-2) managed to hold onto the ball, Lehighton's defense stepped up time and time again."I can't say enough about our defense," said McCarroll. "This week they were so locked in and so focused."(Blue Mountain) hangs their hat on their running game. We knew that if we could slow that running game down and force them to pass the ball we'd have a better chance at success. In the first game (against them on Sept. 25) they made some nice plays in the passing game. We made a few adjustments and our guys were in better position to make those plays."The Eagles did convert on a short scoring drive to open the second half, but the only other two times they reached the Indian side of the field they turned the ball over.Durishin, who had two of his team's interceptions and also recovered a fumble, got that score back late in the third when Cann found him from 21 yards away."Some of our passes weren't that good tonight but when we needed to make plays the balls were right there," said Durishin, whose score made it 19-7. "Me and Tanner Haydt crossed on that route. Cann threw to the back shoulder perfectly and I just got behind the defender and caught the ball."Erik Skrinkosky's sack of Freed in the end zone resulted in a safety late in the fourth quarter and after the ensuing kickoff, Clements scored from five yards out to seal the game."You can't write a story much better than that," said McCarroll about his team playing for a district title in the final home game at Lehighton's current stadium."Win or lose next week these kids have earned a shot to play for a district championship."CONTROLLING CLEMENTS? ... Blue Mountain held Clements to 26 yards rushing in the first half but the senior finished the contest with 95. It was the first time this season he didn't reach at least 100 yards.TURNOVER RATIO ... Lehighton finished the contest with a plus-four ratio. For the year, the Indians are a plus-19. Over the past three seasons, they are a combined plus-40 (75-35).FUNKY FORMATION ... Lehighton ran four plays in a swinging gate formation. Cann centered the ball with Clements and Scherer in the backfield and their teammates near the sideline. Cann threw one pass in the formation while Scherer ran for successful yardage the other times.
