Schuylkill commissioners announce winners of annual phone book collection contest

A West Penn Elementary School student has won third place in Schuylkill County's annual phone book collection.

Madison Reed, 9, collected 410 books for the contest, sponsored by Schuylkill Keep It Pretty and the county Office of Solid Waste & Recycling. The phone books will be recycled.Madison won $75 for her efforts.The third grade student said she will use the money "to buy books."Some of Madison's favorites include "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," "Magic the Horse" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks" books.Madison, the daughter of Angela and Scott Reed, collected the used phone books from her family and friends.County Commissioners Chairman Frank J. Staudenmeier and Vice Chairman George F. Halcovage Jr., along with Solid Waste & Recycling Coordinator Joseph Scribbick, presented Madison with her award and a certificate at a public meeting Thursday.First place went to Kelly Sullivan, a sixth-grade student at Trinity Academy who collected 665 phone books. She won $125.Second place went to Nevah Doyle, a second grade student at John S. Clarke Elementary who collected 526 books and won $100.West Penn Elementary as a whole came in second of the three top schools, collecting a total of 1,374 phone books. It was awarded $100.John S. Clarke Elementary Center was the top collecting school with 11,207 phone books, winning the school $125.Trinity Elementary Center came in third, with 977 books to win $75.
