Hearing held on block grants for Mahoning Township

Before the start of Wednesday's Mahoning Township Supervisors' meeting, a public hearing regarding the CDBG funds and where it would be spent in the township was held.

Jennifer Hunsinger, a representative for the Community Development Block Grant, told the board and residents an estimated $84,076 is the anticipated amount to the township for selected projects. The CDBG provides assistance to aid municipalities in community and economic developments. To be considered an entitlement community automatically qualifying for CDBG grants, municipalities' population must be 4,000 and consist of at least 51 percent classified as low-to-moderate income residents.Nonentitlement communities must compete annually for the funding. Proposed projects have to meet the same guidelines set for earlier mentioned entitlement areas. Mahoning Township is classified as a nonentitlement community. The listed projects include street improvements to Center Road, Mahoning Street and Maple Drive.A survey is being conduct in the specific area to determine if the project will benefit low to moderate income residents, a requirement for the funds. The second project, funded by 2014's money, will be $69,075 to reconstruct Rex Road Bridge.Over 980 people will benefit from this project, according to the report Hunsinger presented. The township also intends to use CDBG funds to repave streets in Meadow Crest Area."At some point we should authorize LTL Consultants to give specs for bridge project, for when county is ready to send it out to bid. That that we are set up to go," township Supervisor Bruce Steigerwalt said.LTL Consultants Ltd., services include municipal engineering, wastewater and water engineering, certified residential and commercial building inspections, zoning and planning services. The company's experience spans to include roadways, stormwater facilities, park and recreational facilities, bridges, wastewater facilities, salt sheds and other municipal facilities.
