Spartans roll over Panthers

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS - Panther Valley didn't know what to expect on the final regular season playing date with Anthracite League foe North Schuylkill

The Spartans ability to run or pass left the Panthers lurking in the dark. With the all-time career passing and catching combo poised to make a lasting impression on Senior Night in Spartan Stadium, senior quarterback Bobby Grigas found his favorite 6-6 target Tevin Murry, also a senior, for 112 yards in receptions to help elevate the Spartans to a robust 46-13 victory. The win propels North Schuylkill (6-4, 5-4AFL) into the District 11 Class AA playoffs next weekend."You've got a stud quarterback and a great receiver, it is very tough to stop," said a disappointed Panther Valley coach Matt Davis. "If their game plan is to throw they can do that very well."Indeed the Spartans left it fly. Twenty-two times completing 17 of those as Murray, who was a first-team Class AA all-state player a year ago had five receptions, two touchdowns - one a 50-yard bomb from Grigas."We're finally getting healthy and that's the real story," said third-year North Schuylkill coach Wally Hall. "(Grigas) injured his ankle in the first game. Finally we have him at 100-perecent. So, yes, we can throw it (more effectively) now."The Spartans threw for 263 yards and rang up 132 yards rushing, led by junior Major Jordan, who finished with 55 yards on 11 carries and a pair touchdowns. There was little fanfare early, even after North Schuylkill had marched 87 yards in 13 plays, capping the drive with a Jordan 1-yard run for a 7-0 lead."I really didn't think it would get out of hand, not the way we played early," mentioned Davis. "But then things suddenly snowballed and we had no answer (on offense) whatsoever."A turnover, one of four in the first half, gave North Schuylkill the ball at the seven. Grigas immediately hit Murray for the score and after Grigas added the placement it was 14-0.Then the lead started to swell. North Schuylkill standout Richie Zahodnick picked off the first of his two interceptions at the Panther Valley 48. Jonathan Smith caught a first-down 44-yard pass, before Jordan cashed-in a four-yard run.Two plays after the North Schuylkill touchdown, Zahodnick had another interception at midfield. The Spartans quickly struck when Grigas launched a 50-yard pass to Murray who raced by the secondary for six more points. Before the half, North Schuylkill added three more six pointers. Zahodnick scored on a 3-yard run and a 12-yard pass from Grigas. Senior Pat Gownley then sped 41 yards to setup his own one-yard score to make it 46-0 at the half. The Panthers would score twice in the second half. Reserve quarterback Mason Goida hit Nathan Miller with a 24-yard score and added a 17-yard touchdown pass to promising sophomore Tristan Blasko.LAST HOORAH … The Panthers finish the season 2-8 after winning back-to-back games before last evening's defeat. A total of 15 seniors dressed for the final time.QUIRKY STATS … Panther Valley had but one first down in the first half, which was by penalty. NS had 14 first downs at the half. NS never punted in the contest.PLAYOFFS … North Schuylkill needed Salisbury to lose to jump to the No. 3 spot for this weekend's playoffs. That never came to pass as the Falcons beat Southern Lehigh. NS will be at Notre Dame in one semifinal and Northwestern, the defending D-11 AA champions, host Salisbury.
