Fillie senior class goes 4-for-4

MINERSVILLE - Four years ago, the Marian Fillies volleyball program won a District 11 championship.

Fast forward to 2015 and guess what? The Fillies won another district championship - their fourth straight. So the question is, what's so special about this championship - an epic five game victory over Nativity on Thursday? The answer is easy. This year's Fillies senior class has been there for it all. They were there for the first of the consecutive titles and last night they stamped their legacy with a fourth district title."It's just so great to be a part of this Marian tradition and I'm happy that I was able to help keep it alive," said Fillie senior outside hitter Maureen Kloap. "We have been in a lot of tough games, close games, and big games and a majority of the time we came away with a win. That says a lot about the girls in this program."The fourth consecutive championship certainly didn't come easy.Nativity battled back throughout the night, but panic never came across the faces of the Fillies. Their courage was most notable in the fifth set down 10-8 with the championship on the line. Marian stormed back to take the game 15-11 and the title. It was evident that senior leadership was a big part of the Fillies rally."Playing in big games over the years has definitely prepared them for games like this," said Marian head coach John "Doc" Fallabel. "We've played some close games throughout the year as well and a few five game matches, which helps you in this situation. It was a great win by a great bunch of girls."The Fillies 2015 senior class is also unique because of the transitions they've had to make that some people might not even realize. One involved a four-year development and the other a one-year position switch.Marian's staple in the middle over its four year championship run has been 6-1 senior Abby Stankiewitch. Stankiewitch, who leads the Fillies in kills this season, didn't even pick up a volleyball until her freshman season."I came to this program never even playing volleyball before and I've been a part of four district championships," said Stankiewitch. "It's just been such a great ride and I wouldn't have had any success without the help of my coaches and teammates. I've learned so much from them and continue to every day."Marian's senior setter Courtney McCall had never even played the position before her senior season. McCall left the floor on Thursday with 44 assists and has come through with over 700 assists on the season. It's just another impressive effort from yet another Marian seasoned veteran."I'm not going to lie, the transition wasn't easy, but my teammates really helped me through it," said McCall. "I owe a lot to my best friend Abby O'Donnell as well. She started all four years here as a setter and I knew I had big shoes to fill when she graduated last year. She worked with me a lot to prepare me for the role. I'm just glad I was able to help my team win this year."Marian seniors Danielle Spillman and Abby Pilla have also been key parts of the Fillies success over the last four years. It's been a total team effort for Marian this season and the results speak for themselves."Our seniors have been great. They put the work in and I told them that a big reason for our run was because of them," said Fallabel. "A lot of the girls sacrificed playing time over the years and had to step in and contribute this season and that's not easy to do. It just shows you the kind of girls they are what they're made of."I'm so proud of them and winning this title shows how much time they've dedicated to this sport over the last four years."
