Block grant funds lights

A $61,000 project to rebuild the women's wash house at Tamaqua's public swimming pool will likely shift to a $134,784 street improvement plan.

The wash house project was to be funded through Community Development Block Grant money. The money for that will probably be moved to the streets project. But, said Schuylkill County grant writer Gary Bender, the 2010 Census revealed that the residential area around the pool does not meet the low-to-moderate income guidelines required for such a project."The wash house would benefit everybody in the community, so that was an eligible project," he said. So, the 2014 CDBG money will be added to 2015 funding to pay for the streets project."We are very frustrated because the project needs help. The new project will help improve our streets and that is a very good thing," said Tamaqua Borough Council president Micah Gursky. The improvements would be to Swatara Street from Broad to Rowe, at a cost of $12,636; Swatara Street from Lafayette to Jerome, at a cost of $17,550; Jerome Street from Pitt to Swatara at a cost of $3,672; Pitt Street from Jerome to Yetten Circle at a cost of $36,378; Nescopec Street from West Elm to Jerome at a cost of $21,078; Nescopec from Jerome to Clay Street, at a cost of $23,544; and Clay Street, from Nescopec to West Street, at a cost of $19,926.The improvements would involve milling, leveling and application of Superpave. At a work session held after a public hearing on the change Thursday, county commissioners approved a resolution modifying the plans.
