Pleasant Vy. in familiar territory

In the words of the late baseball legend Yogi Berra, it's deja vu all over again for the Pleasant Valley football team.

In each of the past two seasons, the Bears have started 0-3, before turning things around to win six straight games and put themselves in District 11 Class AAAA playoff contention. But that's where Pleasant Valley coach Dave Pacchioni is hoping the similarities end.A year ago, the Bears let a double digit fourth quarter lead slip away and dropped their regular season final to Stroudsburg. Despite the loss, the Bears slipped into the district playoffs as the eighth seed and were bounced by top-seeded Easton, 46-0, in the opening round.Faced with almost the exact same situation they were in heading into this game a year ago - win and you're in, lose and hope for help - Pacchioni and the Bears want the sequel to 2014 to stop right here"We have a shot at going to the dance," said Pacchioni. "We probably need to win to get in so this is basically a playoff game for us. We control our own destiny and that's all you ask for. If we win, we're in. We don't need any other help."In order for that to happen, Pleasant Valley will need to beat a Stroudsburg team that is also battling for a District 11 playoff berth."Stroudsburg is a good team that will provide us with a huge challenge," said Pacchioni. "But we're playing our best football of the season right now."We lost 30 seniors from last year's team and a lot of them were starters. Combine that with the fact that we played some pretty good teams (Easton, Bethlehem Catholic and Whitehall) early in the year, and it added up to us taking a little longer than we had hoped to hit our stride."One thing Pleasant Valley has displayed each of the past two seasons that makes Pacchioni proud is the ability to bounce back from awful starts to the season and hit its stride."We took our lumps early, but we have outstanding senior leadership and our kids have improved by leaps and bounds during the course of this winning streak," said Pacchioni. "We have a great bunch of kids and the past nine weeks have been a great ride. Now we get a chance to extend our season even further. We always tell our kids we want to be playing meaningful football games in November and that's exactly what we are doing."With three losses midway through September, a meaningful November game appeared to be a long shot for Pleasant Valley. But to borrow another line made famous by Yogi Berra, the Bears have shown the last two seasons that 'it ain't over till it's over.'**********SUPER SNERR ... Marian's K.J. Snerr helped lead his team to a big win over Shenandoah Valley Friday, scoring five touchdowns in a 41-0 victory. The five scores tied a school record. The last time a Colt player tallied five touchdowns in one game was Nov. 14, 1998 when Justin Barrasso reached the end zone five times during a 32-22 victory over Wilson. Other Marian players to have five TDs in a game include Chris Perhonitch (1996), Bob Agosti (1987) and Jim Agosti (1976).**********ANOTHER PICK-SIX ... Lehighton's Tanner Haydt intercepted a pass last Friday against Tamaqua and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown during a 43-7 victory.Haydt became the fourth Indians player to record a pick-six this season, joining Tyler Cann, Nick Chambers and Zack Crum.In the last 23 years, only one other time has a Times News area team had interception returns by four different players in the same season. That happened in 2004 when Northern Lehigh also had four. The Bulldog players to return interceptions for scores that season were Matt Lilly, Shawn Leadbetter, Matt Sutjak and Frank Gnas.**********TIGERS OUTSCORE OPPONENTS ... Northwestern assistant coach and statistician Greg Mitchell recently passed on an email that was interesting. He noted that a Tiger first happened after Friday night's 31-6 win over rival Northern Lehigh. With the 25-point margin of victory, the Northwestern football program, for the first time ever, has scored more points than it has given up. The Tigers have now scored 9,277 points while allowing 9,259.What Mitchell didn't say, though, was how much ground the program has made up over the past 20 years. Since the 1995 season, the team (which played its first game in 1965) has outscored opponents by 2,169 points (5,701-3,532). To put that in perspective, the average score of a Tiger game since that time is 24.3-15.0 in Northwestern's favor.**********BEARS' OFFENSIVE OUTPUT ... Pleasant Valley set what is believed to be a new school record for points in a game last Friday when it defeated Pocono Mountain East by a 63-20 score. In that contest, 306 yards of offense came directly on PV touchdowns.Over the past 10 years, only one other time among all Times News area teams has more yardage come directly on touchdowns from scrimmage. Ironically enough, it was Pleasant Valley that accomplished the feat.On Sept. 21, 2012 the Bears defeated Lehighton by a 54-0 score. In the game, PV's offensive touchdowns totaled an incredible 374 yards.Over that 10-year span only one other time has a TN team accumulated 300 yards of offense on touchdowns. Amazingly, it was also on Sept. 21, 2012 when Panther Valley had 304 yards of offense on their touchdowns during a wild 49-48 win over Jim Thorpe.
